Corporate Accounts Director

"11 years ago I was an office manager at one of our competitors in Bruges. I was contacted by someone from the former IOS about starting as a consultant in Bruges. After several interviews I dared to make the jump. A small office in a horizontal organisation – I was interested in being responsible for files from A to Z – so for me this was a good next step.

During the first 6 months I informed my ´network´. I visited all my contacts – my private and work contacts had a significant amount of overlap. I explained our approach to everyone and I quickly began receiving assignments. The door opened wide: the quality of our work towered above that of the generalists. During my training I had learned how to keep focused on a file until it was completed. The fact that you are helping people to get a job and that in doing so you are satisfying both candidate and client still gives me a good feeling.
After two years as a consultant, the former IOS was taken over by Hays. Specialisation was the message, because that was the future! I opted for Engineering & Technology – out of interest and natural affinity. I quickly became Team Leader E&T for West Flanders. Then I developed in the direction of more management work, leading the offices in Bruges, Antwerp and Kortrijk. Recently I accepted the challenge of Corporate Accounts Director.

I advise all my colleagues to work as if they were running their own business: determine the ´good candidates´ yourself and also give them the necessary attention. The people you´ve placed and the companies where you´ve placed them are your ambassadors: make sure that they promote you to others. Keep your focus on your assignments and your candidates and don´t let yourself be discouraged. Always show understanding for client and candidate – you need them."
